Euphorbia platyclada — The “Dead Plant” Succulent from Madagascar

Euphorbia Platyclada

  • Product Info

Euphorbia platyclada, also known as the “Dead Plant Euphorbia” or “Dead Wood Plant”, is one of nature’s most fascinating succulents.
Native to the dry forests of Madagascar, this rare species features flattened, mottled brown-pink stems that resemble dried coral or driftwood - giving it an otherworldly, sculptural charm.

Despite its eerie “dead” appearance, this euphorbia is very much alive and remarkably easy to care for. It thrives on neglect, requiring only bright light, fast-draining soil, and infrequent watering.

  • Care guide:

    Light
Euphorbia platyclada grows best in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. It can tolerate some direct morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon rays that can scorch its stems. Indoors, a position near a south- or west-facing window with filtered light works well. Outdoors, it prefers partial shade in hot climates.

    💧 Watering
Water this plant sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season in spring and summer, light watering every two to three weeks is usually enough, depending on temperature and humidity. In fall and winter, when growth slows, water only once a month or less—just enough to keep the stems from shriveling. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, so when in doubt, wait before watering again.

    🌱 Soil
The soil should be very well-draining, similar to a cactus or succulent mix. A good blend combines cactus potting soil or sandy loam with perlite or pumice and coarse sand or crushed lava rock. The pot must have drainage holes to prevent root rot.
