How does it work?

A closed terrarium is like a tiny garden inside a sealed glass container. The plants inside recycle everything they need to live. When water evaporates, it turns into condensation on the glass and then drips back down like rain. During the day, plants use light to make food and release oxygen, and at night they take in oxygen just like we do. This cycle keeps repeating, so the plants can stay healthy with very little help.

The big three questions:

How much water?

Where do I place it?

Does it need repotting?

Watering

In a closed terrarium, less is more when it comes to water. You should never pour water straight in, because too much can cause mold or even kill your plants. Instead, watch the glass. A little mist on the sides means the humidity is just right. If the glass looks dry for a while, give the plants a light spray. If the glass is so foggy you can’t see inside, open the lid for about half an hour to let some of the moisture escape. Once it clears up, you can close it again and let the cycle continue.

Where to put your terrarium.

You can keep your terrarium almost anywhere inside your home. Just be sure to avoid direct sunlight and don’t place it near heaters or radiators, since too much heat can harm the plants. Terrariums usually do well in spots with gentle or low light, but if the plants inside need more, they might start to grow tall and thin as they stretch toward the light.

Do I need to repot it?

A terrarium is mostly a self-contained system that needs very little care. As your plants grow, you can trim them or replace a few if needed, but you usually don’t have to repot them. Trimming the plants to keep them small is often enough, since the terrarium itself provides a good environment for them to thrive.

A few tips to keep your terrarium happy:

Regularly inspect it for mould and dead leaves.

To keep the terrarium free of fungi and mould remove, any dead leaves. The same goes for any decorative items that may. have become mouldy over time.

Trim plants to avoid overgrowing.

Gently prune your plants to maintain their size and shape that way you avoid one plant taking over and dominating the rest.

Your terrarium needs to breathe.

It is beneficial to let your terrarium breathe periodically and exchange air. To do this, simply remove the lid each month and leave it open for a few hours.

Watch out for a summer heatwave.

In the summertime, your terrarium may need to be watered more frequently. Check to make sure there's adequate condensation more frequently. On very hot days your moss may start to dry out so it's advised to mist it occasionally.
