Bird of Paradise (White)

Streltizia nicolai

  • Product Info

With large architectural leaves and fairly simple care requirements these Strelitzia are hard to resist. Also known as Bird of Paradise, they only require watering when the soil has begun to dry to the touch and will thrive when kept in full sun. While they can happily live in a lower light spot, they would be less likely to reward you with their namesake flowers and new large leaves. The Bird of Paradise truly is one of our best sellers.

  • Care guide:

    Light:
Strelitzia Nicolai thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight. For the best growth, place it near a south- or west-facing window. If the light is too low, growth may slow, and leaves may not reach their full size.

    Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring and summer), watering when the top 1-2 inches feel dry. Be careful not to overwater, as this plant is susceptible to root rot if the soil stays soggy. In fall and winter, reduce watering slightly but avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

    Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix that’s slightly sandy for optimal drainage. A blend of standard indoor potting mix with added perlite or coarse sand works well, allowing moisture to drain freely while retaining enough for root hydration.

    Fertilizing:
Feed Strelitzia Nicolai with a balanced fertilizer during the growing months (spring and summer). Skip fertilizing in fall and winter, when the plant’s growth slows naturally.

    Repotting:
Strelitzia Nicolai is a fast grower, so refreshing the soil at each repotting will provide essential nutrients and support robust growth.
