Schlumbergera, better known as the Christmas Cactus, is a cheerful houseplant that comes into its own around winter, producing colourful flowers when most plants are taking a little seasonal break.

Its flat, segmented stems have a slightly trailing habit, making it great for shelves, hanging planters or a sunny windowsill. With the right conditions, it can flower beautifully year after year - and older plants can become seriously impressive.
Care guide:

Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can handle some gentle morning or evening sun, but avoid strong direct midday sun which can scorch the stems.

Water:
Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering slightly after flowering.

Soil:
Use a light, well-draining houseplant mix with plenty of perlite or bark to keep the roots airy and prevent soggy soil.
